Peace Good People. I've been massively slacking and half-ass blogging for a good minute now. My sincerest apologies, but if I may, please allow me to explain. After all, we are kinda like family...

With Father's Day passing, the 4th of July upon us, and my birthday coming up soon, I've just really been missing my dad. I've made no secret of the fact that his death has been hard for me to deal with and for some reason, the holidays always make it worse. The truth is that I've been doing a really good job of feeling sorry for myself lately. All of that is about to stop though. I'm going to make some changes, get back on my "A" game, and get my shit together. I promise! I wanna thank my compadres Digs, EOP, Gambitt, Nappy Style, KidNice, and HeavySoulBrutha for constantly supporting me and holding me down.

Keep On Moving was one of my dad's favorite albums. It was passed on to me and I hadn't listened to it for awhile. Last week, I hit up one of my favorite shops and saw this baby in the window. I came back home and feverishly searched through my pile, found the album, put it on and let it play. The listened to the title track over and over again felt a range of emotions while doing so. I realized that it was ok for me to occasionally allow myself to go to that dark place, but I also realized that it's not ok for me to stay there. I gotta keep moving. I gotta keep going. There just are no other options for me. I went back to the record store and picked an extra copy just because I wanted to share it with one of you. In this journey we call life, there are going to be a ton of upsets and road blocks that come our way. Some people never grow up. Some people never get over shit. Some people are angry, bitter, jealous, and just plain rotten deep down in their soul. However, I refuse to be one of them. No one is worth me selling my soul to the devil. I'm going to do my best to keep this blog fresh, original, and up to par. I'm going to strive to keep improving. It's a war out there. I'm a one-woman army, but I'm always ready to battle! Let's Go!

There is a lot of talent that comes from my neck of the woods and Virginia based rapper & vocalist Bobby Blunt is certainly not an exception. Representing Norfolk, VA, Bobby Blunt is like a breath of fresh air. I was first turned on to his music last year through the Petey's Soapbox EP which was inspired by the life of infamous shock jock Petey Greene. This time around I can't seem to get enough of A Traveler's Notebook - Bobby Blunt's collaboration with Australian producer TA-KU. This electic blend of sounds is funky, soulful, and hip-hop at its finest! It's clear to see that these two make a great team. Let's talk about Musiq! I bought the Aijuswanaseing album when I was in high school after hearing only one song ("Just Friends") and then reading such positive reviews on it in Ebony Magazine of all places. I took it home, gave it a listen, and fell instantly in love with it. His voice, the melodies, and even the song-writing skills on the album were simply amazing! A year after the album came out, a few of my friends an I went to see him and concert and I became even more infatuated with him.

When Juslisen came out in 2002, I felt like Musiq was on a roll. "Halfcrazy" and "Previouscats" were on constant repeat. Soulstar and Luvanmusiq; I liked just a little bit less, but even still, they were two very solid albums. Fast forward to 2008's Onmyradio and 2011's MusiqInTheMagiq. While I felt like Musiq may have stepped away from his usual sound a little bit, both of those albums still have a few great tracks on them. I'm not as big of a Musiq fan as I used to be, but I will always believe that the dude has talent. I had to pick this joint for "Vinyl Sunday" because I've been wearing it out this week. This song in particular. Do you have a favorite Musiq song or album? I'd love to know.

Speaking of Shabazz Palaces, I've been playing to a lot of Digable Planets this past week. The Blow Out Comb album in particular. This group was highly influential to me growing up. Right along with Tribe, the jazz element that they were able to incorporate into their music was phenomenal. One of my favorite tracks on the album and from Digable Planets as a whole would have to be "9th Wonder (Blackitolism)." I love the beat on the joint!

You might know Ishmael Butler as a member of Digable Planets, but it looks as if his side hustle has been working alongside producer Erik Blood and percussionist Tendai Maraire under the moniker Shabazz Palaces. Collectively, these guys make some pretty amazing music that has definitely caught my ear as of lately. Take a listen to a track from the upcoming debut album, Black Up which will be released on June 28th in the US. There's also a cool video for "Blast It" from the Village Beat film, Tough Bond.

Ohio native Stalley has had my ears at attention since the release of his album, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music) back in February. The 16-track album was fresh, original, and a seriously good listen from start to finish. Now, it seems as if everything I'm hearing from this up and comer is becoming another favorite of mine. In despite of becoming one of Maybach Music’s latest signees, Stalley manages to stay true to his sound. His lyrics are intelligent. His flow is nice and with Rashad Thomas on production, it's proving to be a great combination. I really need to thank Digs over at Wux Flux and KidNice from UGC for putting me on to Stalley. I think it's pretty safe to say that I've definitely become a fan. Take a listen to "Chevys and Spaceships" and peep the video for "Slapp."

J Dilla's classic album Donuts will now be released on vinyl featuring the classic Andrew Gura photo which shows Jay-Dee smiling on the cover. The Stones Throw release can be found exclusively at Urban Outfitters through summer & fall 2011. Just a few months ago, Stones Throw published a short back-story on the cover photo. The original release that features the Jeff Jank drawing for the cover will eventually run out of print. Limited for hype? Maybe. It really doesn't matter that much to me though. I'm a sucker for a cover...and Dilla too of course! What do you guys think of the new cover?

I've been getting on EVERYONE'S nerves lately because I can't stop playing or singing Sade records. Yeah, I know! Sade has a one of a kind voice and no one can really sing like her blah, blah, blah... but dammit if I don't try! Sade is actually someone that I had to grow to love. When I was younger, I didn't fully appreciate her music and actually hated when my mom would play her stuff. It wasn't until I got into high school that I really got into her and began to understand and appreciate how deep, moving, and beautiful her music really is. However, one thing I always noticed is how easy on the eyes she is. Her band is amazing and in my opinion, they never received enough credit. Still, I love Sade and she will always be one of my favorite artists. One can't really say enough about how dope she is...

Why vinyl? There's just something about the sound. Nothing compares to the sound of the record spinning, the whispers between the vinyl and the needle.

What was your first album? How did you get it? Curtis (Curtis Mayfield). I was browsing through the record store, with no record player mind you. There was mostly rock and then I saw him. In all his glory, Mr. Mayfield.

What prompted you to start collecting? Growing up my mother had an extensive collection, but never played any of her vinyl.

Favorite spots to get records: Thrift stores.

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up? Because I got what I wanted from what was available, there is no regret in that aspect. I do wish I had gone the day before like I planned, because Superfly by Curtis Mayfield has just been bought before I got a hold to Curtis.

This record is special because: It was the first to my collection, aside from the creative genius of the artist. Certain songs bring back memories that I hope to never forget.

Peace Everybody. It's Sunday so I'm guessing you know what that means. If you haven't checked out Danielle's selection last week, be sure to do so. This week I thought I'd do a "Record Store Day" edition of Vinyl Sunday and preset some of my findings.

The overall experience of Record Store Day this year was pretty good. Unlike last year, I got up pretty early with my heart set on getting Rahael Saadiq's "Radio" 7" and Jamie xx's remix of Adele's "Rolling In The Deep", but it didn't happen. With a line wrapped around the corner, I had a quickly give up on that dream. However, all was not lost. I found some pretty good records and even got to catch a live performance by Richmond's own No BS Brass Band. The store was crowded, the weather sucked, and about an hour into festivities, I was ready to pack it up and go home. I didn't do too much damage this year, but there's always next year, right?

This record is special because: I know that Thriller came out in 1982 the year I was born. My mother and father were both huge Michael Jackson fans. One year, Christmas of 91', I got a red leather jacket and white glove! Man that's all I needed because I would sit up and look at MTV allllll night long, doing every dance routine there was a video for! LOL! There were 2 videos I was crazy about: "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Remember the Time." I would do the moon walk allllll over the house and it used to drive my grandmother crazy! That Thriller album means a lot to me because other then being born into a great year for music, it made history! That album is one of the originals that were made in 82'. Not a reprint.

Why vinyl? I love the crisp sound, the crackle from the dust hitting the needle.

What was your first album? How did you get it? My first album was Stanley Turrentine "The Look of Love." "The Look of Love" was given to me by my birth mother to start my own record collection.

What prompted you to start collecting? A lot of people may not know that I am adopted and my earliest memories of my birth mother is my mom playing old jazz records. Every time I play classic jazz the great memories of my childhood come to life.

Favorite spots to get records: My favorite spots are yard sales, dusty grooves, and random antique shops.

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up? It was a Chuck Brown gogo record, I don't remember what album or single it was.

This record is special because: When I left Panama I spent several years in the DMV, gogo music grew on me. When I first saw the record I had no clue what gogo was or who Chuck Brown was but you live and learn.

Tell me about your Vinyl Sunday selection: My Vinyl Sunday Selection is No I'd's classic album "Accept Yourself and Be Your Own", the album title speaks for itself.

I took some time off, but I'm back in full effect with another "Vinyl Sunday" selection. If you haven't checked out Samirah's selection, please be sure to do. Next up we have DC native and the woman behind Dirty Pretty Thangs and Notes On A Scandal: Ms. CaShawn. So without further ado, let's talk records!

Name: I'm CaShawn, but I'm better known online as The Pretty Brown Girl, "PBG". Somebody even shortened that to "Peebz" last year. It's all good. LOL!

Hometown: Washington, DC. Born and raised and still here.

Right now I’m listening to a lot of: 70s Funk and 80s R&B

Why vinyl? I'm 37. I grew up and developed my love of music before even cassette tapes were widely popular. Listening to music on vinyl is more about than just the music itself for me. The snap-crackle-pop of it all takes me back to the happiest times of my life: my childhood. Nostalgia.

What was your first album? How did you get it?: My first album was "He's The DJ and I'm The Rapper" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. I think I was about 14 or 15 and I bought it with money from my very first summer job. That had to be sometime in 1988. I wish I still had it.

What prompted you to start collecting? Believe it or not, it was my kids. My daughter became interested in vinyl from her love of shopping in thrift stores, so I found a second hand record player on Craigslist and bought it for her. Not long after that, she and my son gave me "Thriller" and the soundtrack to "Mahogany" on vinyl for Mother's Day. I got hooked. My goal is to get every Stevie Wonder LP on vinyl. I'm up to about 8 right now.

Favorite spots to get records: I like to buy albums at CD Game Exchange here in Silver Spring, MD, right across the DC-Maryland line. I also hunt for vinyl when I go to thrift stores. Online, I go to Ebay.

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up: I haven't experienced that yet. I find such good prices, I usually can always get the stuff I find. I find REALLY good prices all the time.

Tell me about your Vinyl Sunday selection: I chose "Chameleon" by LaBelle because they are my favorite girl group of all-time. "Chameleon" is an absolutely flawless album. I always say I want to be Nona Hendryx when I grow up because she is one of the best songwriters ever. LaBelle was so futuristic! I haven't heard any girl group come nearly as close to the harmonies of LaBelle. Even the closest (EnVogue) isn't all that close to them. Patti LaBelle, Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx all stood on their own, but together they were a force to be reckoned with. I found that album (as well as "Nightbird" and "Phoenix") in CD Game Exchange during a Black Friday sale. It was $2.00 with 30% off. SCORE!

James Brown or Al Green? James Brown. He did the soundtrack to "Black Caesar". I hope I can find that on vinyl too. I have a thing for Blaxploitation movies.

80s R&B or 90s R&B? 80s R&B. More songs for *body rolling*. You know, like in the video for "Centipede" by Rebbie Jackson. Wow...that's another record I'd like to cop.

Old Mary J. Or New Mary J? Old Mary J.'s music, New Mary J's life.

Boyz In The Hood or Do The Right Thing? Do The Right Thing. That movie was epic. Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee!

I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. That is why the next "Vinyl Sunday" selection comes from my niece Samirah. I'm trying to teach her the value of records and music in general. Right now, she only sees them as "the things you are not supposed to touch", but hopefully that will change later on in life. She only has two: "Drive Me Wild" by Vanity 6 and Rob Base and DJ Ez Rock's "Joy and Pain." However, I think her favorite record is Crystal Water's "Makin' Happy" because it makes her bust a move each time it is played.

Whenever I see President Obama's face in a newspaper or magazine, I draw hearts around it! I do it mostly to piss off the people that I work with because the halls are always filled with anti-Obama chatter. While I don't agree with all of his policies, I do LOVE and support my president. I've also decided that South Carolina resident Toro Y Moi deserves hearts around his picture too. I've fallen in love with his new album, Underneath The Pine. It always puts me in a good mood. Right now I’m listening to a lot of: Acoustic jazz and mellow sounds, however, my music selections change with my moods.

Why vinyl? I love the texture. I love that authentic feel of the cracks and scratches that haven't been digitally distorted. I love music I can FEEL. Vintage. Classic. Timeless.

What was your first album? How did you get it? My first album was Prince "1999". It was a gift from my dad on my 10th birthday (7-12-99) I was so excited because for years I was wandering through his collection and getting in trouble for it. That was the moment I had one to call my own; good feeling.

What prompted you to start collecting? My family. Musicians and music heads whose passion for music just passed on from generation to generation.

Favorite spot to get records: Full Moon Records in Atlanta

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up? Funny, I don't have any. Mainly because I feel like my mom and dad's records combined with my own collection, make for all the music I could ever ask for. If we don't have it, you can be sure there is someone in the fam who does. On those occasions where I feel like something is missing, I follow my heart and just go get it.

This record is special because: Daddy would blast on some random Saturday "Isn't She Lovely" and lip sync it to me. I know it sounds offly corny, but it really made me feel loved and beautiful. It made me laugh. I've always associated this album with those Saturdays.

Tell me about your Vinyl Sunday selection: I chose Songs in the Key of Life because I've always been so impressed with Stevie Wonder, who has been forced by circumstance to see the world in music. Compared to the other 17 albums he recorded, I feel like this one gave the listener the best illustration of his life in its entirity; spirituality, struggle and triumph, politics, culture, matters of the heart, etc. It was simply an epic audio experience and to me; it was his definining moment. This album will forever be a prominent landmark in the evolution of American music.

Back when BET's program Rap City used to dominate my television experience and even before Big Tigger had the basement, I would sit and wait for Monie Love's video to come on. Her loud colors, crazy fashions, and British accent were so intriguing to me. She along with Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, and MC Lyte were paving the way for young ladies to enter into the rap game with respect, poise, and dignity. You gotta love that! "Ladies First" will always be a classic, but this one is without a doubt a classic to me also!

Last week was a very busy and and somewhat stressful one for me. I'm not looking for this one to be any different, but I'm trying my best not to complain. Besides, no one wants to hear that shit anyway, right? The mere fact that I'm alive means that I am blessed. My friends, family, loved-one and of course MUSIC are what's doing a good job to keep me sane.

This past week, I've been able to find peace in HomeBase Presents Live At The Clubhouse Vol. 1. This joint is so smooth, relaxing, and well put together, that I think I've even heard it in my sleep a few times. I'm especially diggin' CoCo O. (of Quadron's) cut, "Sleep." This woman's voice is heavenly! The jazzy undertones fit the track perfectly. It's definitely great Sunday morning (or any morning) music. Take a listen and download below!

Vinyl Sunday time has arrived again! Many, many thanks to who IV the Polymath for last week's survey. This week's selection comes courtesy the man I call "the coolest blogger in all of Richmond, VA," Dave B. aka HeavySoulBrutha. If you have an affinity for deep funk and soul music, HeavySoulBrutha's Put The Needle to the Record is definitely where it's at! Without further ado, let's hit the survey!

Right now I’m listening to a lot of: Jazz Funk Hammond Organ specialists like Lonnie Smith, Richard "Groove" Holmes and Jimmy McGriff.

Why vinyl? It goes back to my Pops. He was a big music cat. He was always in the record store searching for new music and calling up the local radio station trying to get info on what was being played if it hit him right. He was crazy strict about his records and my brother and I were not allowed anywhere near them. Naturally, when he'd leave the crib for work I'd automatically start digging through his crates. As I got a bit older and was able to turn on his Hi-Fi and play them, resisting the urge to mess with his settings and remain undetected, is when it became about the sounds on the records and not just the art. Pops collection was quite varied but, lucky for me, he definitely had an ear for SOUL music.

What was your first album? How did you get it? I bought two albums on the same day back in 1979. It was late August and I had saved up money from cutting grass in the hood all summer long. The records were "Off The Wall" by Michael Jackson and "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge.

What prompted you to start collecting? I really didn't have a lot of vinyl. In the 80's it was all about cassettes and being portable. Walking around with a boom box on your shoulder was about the coolest thing you could do back then. And the 90's was nothing but CD's. It wasn't until about five or six years ago after seeing a bootleg VHS of DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist mixing 45's for their Brainfreeze set that I really came back around to vinyl. I think those two cats inspired a lot of folks to start digging. There's just so much obscure music out there on records that never made it to CD. All those regional record labels that never had major label distribution and have never been converted to the digital format. That's really what excites me and keeps me digging, finding those gems.

Favorite spots to get records: It had to be the basement at Plan 9 here in Richmond. I hadn't been there in a while and stopped through just a few days ago to discover that my beloved basement had been closed down. It just hurt me to my heart. But, there are two other vinyl only shops here in town that have recently opened and both usually have some good stuff. Other than that, sometimes if you hit some Salvation Army Thrift Stores at the right time you can find a few gems. And I've got one more secret spot that I ain't tellin' no one about. ;-)

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up: When I first starting searching for 45's I ran across "The Next Ball Game" by Inell Young. It's one of my all-time favourite cuts. The drums on it are mind blowing. Only thing is at the time I had no idea who she was or had heard the song. I've been searching for that 45 ever since. Major amateur digging blunder.

Tell me about your "Vinyl Sunday" selection: "Thrust" is Herbie Hancock's follow up to his monumental album, "Headhunters." In some ways I like "Thrust" a bit more. Harvey Mason, who played drums on "Headhunters" was replaced by Mike Clark who came out of Oakland, CA and was great friends with Herbie's bassist, Paul Jackson who is also from Oak Town. Mike is one of the baddest drummers on the planet and his playing with Paul Jackson has an amazing FUNK symmetry that can't be explained. Only musicians really understand that kind of connection. I also think they made Herbie play a bit funkier as well.

James Brown or Al Green: Gotta be JB!

Old Janet Jackson or New Janet Jackson: I think I prefer middle Janet. The three albums she did from 89-97 are the ones I always listen to. Saw her in concert in 94 and it was killin'!

I can't lie: I let out a tiny scream when I saw the artwork of Emory Douglas on the cover of the March 2011 issue of Juxtapoz magazine. As a long time fan, his work has always been very inspirational to me. Emory Douglas, the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from the 1960s into the early 1980s, created the iconic graphic works that visually represented the group all around the world. His pieces are stunning, political, moving, and timeless. He was able to capture the very essence of the what the party really represented, which was freedom, justice, and the empowerment of the African American community. We've come a long way, but there is still progress that needs to be made. The struggle continues and Emory Douglas' work is proof of that. Happy "Vinyl Sunday" folks! Last week, Gemini 5ive was kind enough to tackle the survey. If you haven't checked out his post, be sure to do so. Next up, we have instrumental musician, hip hop producer, and blogger IV the Polymath. I can tell by his survey that he's definitely a vinyl junkie, so let's talk records!

Hometown: Grew up in Saginaw, MI & Potsdam, NY, but currently reside in Muncie, Indiana.

Right now I’m listening to a lot of: Jazz! Always jazz & funk for me. Some hip hop as well – I really enjoy the instrumental stuff. As far as names go: Lonnie Liston Smith, Grover Washington Jr., The Meters, Damu The Fudgemunk, RJD2, Dorothy Ashby, Fela Kuti, Quincy Jones, A Tribe Called Quest, Cymande, etc.

Why vinyl? Because you can’t drop the needle on a CD haha. I think every wax lover would agree that you just can’t reproduce the sonic beauty, dynamic range, & rugged crackle that vinyl provides. The artwork always looks better on a 12”, the liner notes are fun to read, & there is just an overall dopeness records possess that other formats can’t even come close to. And yo, let’s not forget the smell! I love the smell of vinyl records.

What was your first album? How did you get it? My mom had an ill collection when I was growing up & my first vinyl experiences came thru her. She let me bring her Herbie Hancock records up to my room & that started my love for both vinyl & jazz.

What prompted you to start collecting? I started making beats & bought a couple of turntables so naturally I needed to get some records. It progressively became an uncontrollable addiction.

Favorite spots to get records: Philadelphia Record Exchange is my favorite. It’s 3 stories tall & the upstairs has an extensive collection of jazz. A local spot called Dan’s Downtown Records also has excellent records for mad cheap.

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up: Ah you know I really don’t have any regrets. If I can’t afford the records I want I usually hide them in the country section & come back to grab them when I get the loot haha.

Tell me about your Vinyl Sunday selection: "Fikisha (To Help Someone To Arrive)" is one of my all-time favorite grooves with plenty of energy. I usually do laundry & clean the crib on Sundays, so I need something upbeat, but still laid back enough to be consistent with that lazy Sunday vibe. "Change Up The Groove" fits that description perfectly. Also, this particular record has a classic break on it making it even more special.

James Brown or Al Green: Got plenty of love for Al Green, but it’s JB no contest.

Old Mary J. (Blige) or New Mary J: Definitely old Mary J. The beats were better back then if nothing else.

It's "Vinyl Sunday" time again ladies and gentlemen! If you haven't checked out EOP's edition last week please be sure to do so! This week's selection comes courtesy of NC native Gemini 5ive. When he's not making beats or blogging on Ferrari 110, my bet is that he's probably in the crates. So with that said, let's talk records!

Right now I’m listening to a lot of: Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, and The Stylistics

Why vinyl? I’ve always believed that “Analog/ Mono” is better than any digital format period.

The sound just has certain warmth to it that I can’t quite explain. I also grew up having my dad play his records all the time in the house so I got use to the way that records sound as oppose to CD’s and MP3’s. In just a more natural sound in my opinion.

What was your first album? How did you get it? The 1st record I bought with my own money was a 12 inch single. The single was Lord Finesse and DJ Mike Smooth’s “Strictly for the ladies”/ “Back to back rhyming” Back in the day there was a record store not too far from where I work now and they had some wax in there and since I’m a big Lord Finesse fan I thought I’d check it out.

What prompted you to start collecting? My parents had this crate of records in our basement and around halfway through high school I started listening to them and just got into researching different groups and various styles of music as time went along. Before I knew it I went from one crate at 18yrs old to now having 20 of my own at 27. It’s very addictive.

Favorite spots to get records: Right now it’s at my job. I’m fortunate enough to actually be working at a record store so I get 1st dibs on new stuff that comes in. I also like going to places like Salvation Army’s and garage sales

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up: Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells”

This record is special because: Well along with me being a big music guy I’m also into classic horror films and the very beginning of the record contains the theme from “The Exorcist” I’m a big fan of the movie and this album is even better. It’s one of the most abstract records I’ve ever heard. I passed on picking it up because the LP was in bad shape but I still should have picked it up though. It’s all good though I’m sure I’ll find it again.

Tell me about your Vinyl Sunday selection: This album is entitled “Animals” by Pink Floyd. I had a friend of mine that was selling some of her records and I decided to buy this from her and I can listen to this record from front to back. It’s just a real spaced out record with distant keyboards and heavy guitar riffs. One minute it’s calm and then the next the energy is all the way up. I just love how the record progress’s up and down.

James Brown or Al Green? “JB” all day!!!!!!!!! Al is my man and all but James had the classic break beats, the moves and just and overall style that no one could ever duplicate. The man was so dedicated to perfecting his craft. I don’t even think it was ever about being famous for James. It’s was about giving the people what they came for and showing people what true passion he had for his music.

Old Mariah or New Mariah? Old Mariah, she was hungrier about having something to prove back then.

It's Vinyl Sunday time again! If you haven't checked out Devoya's interview last week, be sure to do so! Next up we have the brother EOP of 1081 Creations (shout out to the whole crew)! Last year, EOP dropped a tight instrumental project entitled, Pastel Moods, which was a follow-up from his Scent Of An Angel EP. He's also a serious gamer, blogger, and crate digger so let's talk records!

Name: Eyesofphases aka EOP and known to some as Steve

Hometown: I am originally from Greenville NC, but now I reside in Greensboro NC.

Right now I’m listening to a lot of: Jamiroquai, The Roots, Robert Glasper, Maylee Todd, Reality Gambitt, Curren$y, Slipknot, and much more.

Why vinyl? I just love the sound of vinyl. No cd, tape, or ipod compares to it. I can go buy a new album on wax and its worth money years from now. Not to knock people that have ipods, but I don't think that data will be worth anything down the line. Nothing compares to physically holding music, running your fingers across the grooves, and looking at the record to see the breaks.

What was your first album? How did you get it? My first album was "The Brothers Johnson" and it was passed down to me from my mom.

What prompted you to start collecting? For me, just having a passion for music was enough and also having limited pressed records. I treasure the fact of having rare records that are hard to find. Besides all the producers I looked up to sampled records, and that was something I had to do.

Favorite spots to get records: Remember When, Edward Mckay Bookstore, Schoolkids Records, My Favorite Things, Record Exchange, there's a few flea markets and antique malls in Winston Salem NC but the names are slipping my mind. For my new current records, I visit Fat Beats, Sand Box Automatic, Underground Hip-Hop, and of course Ebay and Amazon.

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up: It was on Goldsboro NC, I saw this record with a young Mannie Fresh on the cover. I don't remember the name or anything, just the picture of a young Mannie Fresh. I went in the store a few times and never bought the record, the one day I went back to go buy the record the store was closed.

James Brown or Al Green? James Brown of course, his production was crazy and he demanded your attention.

Old Madonna or New Madonna? Honestly I like both, I like the "old" Madonna for being revolutionary. I love the "new" Madonna because you can tell she still has fun doing music and she's not afraid to cross genres. Most importantly just the fact she's stll doing music and is relevant today.

Next up, we have my soul sister from another mother: Devoya Mayo. Devoya is a DJ/Poet/Craftaholic/Social Butterfly and one of the voices behind “Daughters Of Dilla.” She was also featured alongside Aloe Blacc on rapper Fashawn’s track “Hey Young World” from his 2009 album, Boy Meets World. Niiice! She's good people and a serious crate digger, so let's talk records!

Right now I’m listening to a lot of: I’ve been on a mad Fela kick as of late, with some Joe Strummer BBC Radio Sessions mixed in for added comfort.

Why vinyl? I grow up w/a Mama who although she didn’t know it, was a serious crate digger. I started babysitting for money around 11 or 12 and each week when I would get paid I would go with her to J&C House of Records and we’d each end up with a bag of vinyl, black love incense and the playlist of the week. I guess for me, it’s all tied up in nostalgia.

What was your first album? How did you get it? I’m pretty sure my first album was some Disney jawn when I was five. That’s when I got my first record player. But as for me physically going into a record store and buying my own, that would probably be "Uncle Jam Wants You To Funk With Him” by Funkadelic or “Real People” by Chic. The more I think about it, it had to be Funkadelic because that came out first. Again, it was purchased at J&C House of records on one of my shopping trips with Ma Dukes. Did I mention all this took place while other kids my age were playing freeze tag outside? Crazy…

What prompted you to start collecting? I think I have a hoarder gene. I can’t seem to let go of them.

Favorite spots to get records: When I’m in the Bay I always make it a point to drop in to Amoeba on Haight Street. They treat me right. My hide out spot is this tiny little headshop in a town called Merced called “Strawberry Alarm Clock”. I got Black Moses in mint condition for $1. Whew….

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up? I always, always, always regretted buying "Breaking Atoms" by Main Source on tape back in the day. Haunted me for many years. BUT…the vinyl gods lifted the embargo and on Christmas Eve, a cute boy literally left it on my doorstep for me. Interestingly enough, he didn’t even know I’d been haunted by never owning a vinyl copy of it. Niiice right?!

Tell us about your "Vinyl Sunday" selection: Stevie Wonder is Truth! His message, method and music all collide into a blend of hope and change and love that few others can even dream to achieve. This album came to me exactly when I needed it and every word transformed itself into my being. If ever there was an artist that was Sunday worthy…it is Stevie Wonder!!!

Old Madonna or New Madonna: I may be the only person you will ever meet that’s indifferent about Madonna. In the 80’s I didn’t check for her cuz I was on some Paisley Park type mission for real for reals and she wasn’t someone who spoke to me at all. Now, she doesn’t register as much more than a mom who works out a lot. Is that bad? I also have never owned any music by her, physical or digital. However, I loved that movie Desperately seeking Susan. Just sayin.

Records are so special to me. They always have been. The only thing I love more than my own collection is seeing what others have in their collection. I believe that you can tell a lot about a person by what they listen to. So with that said, I decided to start a "Vinyl Sunday" column to get a glimpse into some of the lives of my fellow vinyl junkies and lovers out there. Why Sunday? Right now I’m listening to a lot of: Jazz and 90's Hip Hop

Why vinyl? The sound, the crackle, the warmth, vinyl is the essence. That's where it all started for me.

What was your first album? How did you get it? My very first record was a 45 by The Gap Band "Get Up Early In The Morning", and my mother gave it to me. Fisher Price made portable turntables for kids in the 70's and early 80's, and I used to play that record every day before school around Kindergarten or First Grade. Classic!

What prompted you to start collecting? What got me involved and also keeps me digging is hip hop. I got good memories of the first time I heard Tribe, De La, Brand Nubian, Gang Starr, Diamond D, Pete Rock, Redman, EPMD, Digable Planets, Beatnuts, Geto Boys, Marley Marl, Public Enemy, Dr. Dre, Dilla, Madlib & 9th Wonder. The music they put out is timeless. The sound of these records made me want to learn music, and dig for the original samples. I got into funk, old soul and jazz music early, because of hip hop. Sampling is as essential to hip hop as water is to life.

Favorite spots to get records: Unfortunately, many of my favorite spots around Atlanta have shut down. I used to love EarWax (legendary), Fantasy Land and Dumpster Dive. Wax 'N Facts was like a second home for awhile and Criminal Records is very dope as well. Online, nobody can touch Dusty Groove, period.

Tell me about a record you still regret not picking up? That's easy, Ike White "Changin' Times". I had that original record in the palm of my hand a few years ago, sealed, and passed on it because I thought the $50 dollar asking price was too high.

This record is special because: I can't find it now for less than a small fortune. "Love and Affection" is a hard break on there. At the time when I passed on it, I didn't know what was on the record. After hearing it a while later, I'd say $50 bucks was a steal. There's breaks on there for days.

Tell us about your Vinyl Sunday selection: I chose this album, because I was recently listening to the Jodeci remix of "Freekin' You". This remix included Ghostface Killah and Raekwon, and when Ghost rhymed "I got the Hey Love album, plus Jodeci, roll us up, the EZ Widers near the ashtray" I understood exactly what he meant. This album has been in my family since I can remember. I still remember the commercial too "Can I borrow that?...Nah my brother, you got to get your own!" Hey Love is three LP's full of nothing but classic soul artists like Linda Jones, The Delfonics, Dells, Intruders, Chi-Lites, Dramatics, Stylistics, Persuaders, Moments, they're all on here! This is my favorite record to play on Sunday, most definitely.

James Brown or Al Green: I love Al to death, but I gotta run with James. James has the most solid stable of hits. During the height of racism and segregation, many black artists were not allowed to have their pictures on the covers of their own albums. It was during this time, James had a picture of his face that served as the logo for his own record company, and he also had his face on the side of his own private jet!

Old Madonna or New Madonna: Old Madonna, circa '83 or '84, "Holiday", "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" are the classics.

I know this is supposed to be a post about Kid Sis but, let me just start off by saying that 90's R&B group Jodeci will forever have a special place in my heart. Crazy, right? I know. Follow me though. I promise I'm going somewhere...

I get a lot of shit from people who don't really understand their genius, but I don't really care. As a kid growing up in the 90s, their music provided much of my life's soundtrack. I had all their albums, a poster, and remember just writing their name randomly on my notebook at times. Some groups, songs, and albums just bring on nostalgia that can't be explained. I remember the first time I heard "Forever My Lady." I was mad young, but my sister took the first verse, my cousin took the second, and I had third - Jo-Jo's bridge.

Which leads me to Kid Sis's mixtape, Kiss Kiss Kiss, in which she sampled Jodeci's song "Forever My Lady" on track #13. For that reason alone, I'm highly recommending you download this joint. The rest of the tracks aren't too bad either...

Suff Daddy - The Gin Diaries

Beats, Life, & Tanqueray - I think those words accurately describe The Gin Diaries. Although, I'm not a heavy drinker, I think Suff Daddy's ode to one of his favorite past times was one of the best albums in 2010. Some of the songs have lyrics, some do not, but all of them are really enjoyable. Even though The Gin Diaries is a short piece of work, it's just the right amount of music that you need to get you through the day. With heavy influences in jazz, hip-hop, and soul, The Gin Diaries has something for every music lover. You can also tell by the production that J. Dilla made an impact or had some kind of influence on Suff Daddy. To be completely honest, I had to put this record at the top of my list because it's the one I played the most. I even had my year old niece singing along to some of the songs. For about three months straight, I played this one daily and considered it my soundtrack to everything! Some of my favorites are "I Need A Break", Fleur Earth's take on the Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' "Oh Bébé", "Deep Shit" featuring Mar, "Ozdemir", and of course "5 O'clock Suff" featuring Miles Bonny.

Every once in a while, you run into an album or EP that deserves "classic" status. After one listen, you can see yourself playing it for years to come. This next selection for my "Top Five of 2010" is definitely one of those albums. Even though it's technically an EP, I credit this one with restoring my faith in music and opening my ears up to many different genres.

Conversations With Her - Full Crate & Mar

Tracks from Conversations With Her, like "She Was Fly" had been floating around the internet for awhile. However, it wasn't until January 2010 that Full Crate and Mar added it to the EP's official release. To sum up this EP in one word, it was simply incredible! Laid-back beats, hazy melodies, and thick bass made it standout as a project that was truly unique. Its spacy, soulful, and atmospheric sound from start to finish made me play this joint regularly. Full Crate and Mar are both great artists in their own right. Together, they make magic. I look forward to hearing more from these two. My favorite tracks on the EP are "I Said", "Surreal Moments", and of course "She Was Fly."

Let's face it, free music is no longer a novelty. You can hop on the internet nowadays and find just about any song or album that you could ever want for free. In my day, music piracy consisted of a radio, a blank tape, and a whole lot a patience. We all know that's not the case anymore. I'll be the first to admit that I sometimes take for granted the whole "free music" thing just because it's always there. However, when I get GOOD music free that comes directly downloadable from the artist or artists, it feels more personal and adds a nice touch. With that said, let's hop right into number three....

The Stuyvestants - Brooklyn's Finest

The collaborative effort between Allan Cole (Algorythm) and Darien Victor Birks (Flwrpt) was nothing less than pure genius. From the album's concept to the design, I found myself highly impressed and listening to this joint over and over again. 2010 consisted of a lot of instrumental music, abstract beats, and chill-out music for me so this was right up my alley. The 60's, 70's-ish soul feel reminded me a little bit of Pete Rock's stuff. I'm also a huge lover of soul music so it was probably a given that I'd love this one. Props to EOP for putting me on to this one!

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas. I ate too much, drank too much, and now I'm planning to sleep it all off, but not before I drop another selection in my "Top 5 of 2010." I realize that technically my next selection is an EP, but I think it still counts. EPs are almost like albums anyway, right?

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble “Heritage” EP

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are one of a kind! These brothers have rightfully gained respect from all over the world for their live, hot brass sound. However on the Heritage EP, I think the 9-piece band truly outdid themselves! Their beautiful interpretations of songs by artists such as Jay Z, Fela, Art Of Noise, Outkast and Madlib & MF Doom were truly unique and inspiring. By choosing to cover artists that have influenced them in one way or another, they were able to put together something really amazing and authentic. There's not too much more that I can say about HBE. The music speaks for itself. I gushed about these guys on M.I.S.S. back in May. Two of my favorite cuts on the Heritage EP are "Spottie" and "Moments."

Things I Never Told You No. 1,234,876,999: I love Wham! No, see I don't think you understand. I like really love me some Wham! Those guys will forever have a special place in my heart. That is one of the reasons why I'm really feeling Mar's latest variation or cover of Wham's classic song, "Last Christmas." Anyone who knows me personally will be able to tell you that I'm not the biggest fan of Christmas music. I'm not a scrooge or anything like that. It's just that since I've lost two very special loved ones in the past year, Christmas music makes me sad for some reason. However, this particular song has never made me feel down. Mar also does a really great job with his interpretation of it. Take a listen to the track and download if you like what you hear! So after much debate, I've decided to put together a list of my favorite albums of the year. It's a hard thing to do because 2010 brought us such great music. Truth be told, I could probably do about 10, but I'm lazy (sometimes) and it was hard enough just to come up with 5. Some stuff will definitely be left out, but it doesn't mean I loved the albums or artists any less. I encourage my blogger fam to do the same. I'd love to see what their picks will be. So in no particular order (except for #1), let's get right to what I wore out this year!

Erykah Badu: New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh

Erykah Badu is one of those artists whose style changes throughout the years, but her ability to make solid, classic, and timeless good music doesn't. When you pick up an Erykah Badu album, you never know what to expect or which direction she'll take you in. To me, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh was noticeably smooth and cohesive throughout. However, her use of live instrumentation is probably what really stood out the most. It gave the album more of an organic feel. Compared to the abundance of "R&B" music that was brought to us this year, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh was/is in a class by itself. Some of my favorite tracks are "20 feet tall", "Agitation", "Out of my mind", and of course the epic/infamous "Window Seat."
